The Ridge House

Ridge House (1836). The Ridge House, located in Fayetteville at 230 W. Central, began in 1836 as a one-story dogtrot log house with stone fireplaces in both rooms.  Mrs. Sarah B. Ridge, who had sought refuge in Fayetteville after the assassination of her Indian husband, John Ridge, by Cherokee dissidents, purchased the house in 1839.  In later years, it underwent a series of renovations and served as a boardinghouse before falling into disrepair.

Private contributions generated by the Washington County Historical Society saved the home from demolition in 1971.  Two years later it was placed on the National Register of Historical Places.  Restoration of the home was funded by the Arkansas Historic preservation Program, a Fayetteville Community Block Grant, and continued private contributions (Brown, p. 171).
